Alexander Valley Vineyard, Sin Zin, 2021, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California, America

Producer Profile

After purchasing the historic Cyrus Alexander homestead, Harry and Maggie Wetzel strived to create a thriving agricultural lifestyle on the property.  They raised their children along with their vines in Alexander Valley, providing inspiration and encouragement as they developed the estate together.

Decades later, the fourth generation of their family is growing up amongst vineyards and next door to the working winery that is known around the world as “AVV”.  You could call it a family tradition.  The Wetzel Family would be inclined to agree.

Winemaker Kevin Hall is constantly adapting to the rhythms of nature, the readiness of the vineyards and the evolution of the individual wines. While their vineyards provide the sense of terroir and consistent character of  fruit, the winemaking staff provide the invaluable experience.  Their work is constant and crucial; topping up the barrels to minimize air contact as they develop, monitoring and measuring the young wines as they progress, and tasting, tasting, tasting.  Decades of experience tying vineyard and winery together give AVV total control of wine production, resulting in rich, complex wines that showcase a truly robust sense of place.

Viticulture

In 1978 Hank Wetzel produced the very first vintage of Sin Zin and wine drinkers fell in love with the elegant, balanced flavours of Zinfandel from Alexander Valley Vineyards. Decades later Sin Zin is still charming fans. This 44th vintage continues that tradition.

2021 was almost a perfect growing season, though it began with a cold start, and lack of rain. The weather warmed up, but the drought continued. This was followed by weeks of steady daytime heat and cool evenings. The berries ripened evenly, however yields were a bit lighter than in prior vintages due to the lack of rainfall.

Winemaking

Each lot was destemmed, fermented separately and then aged for 16 months in American oak barrels.

Tasting Note

This vintage shows great colour, enticing aromas and big flavours. In the glass there are loads of spicy, fruity aromas of dark fruits – black cherry and boysenberry, dark chocolate, black pepper, oak and a hint of vanilla.
Sin Zin is a widely recognized California classic. This aromatic wine has a solid core of red and black fruits with rich spicy flavours of blueberry, black cherry, topped with black pepper and chocolate. This is a rich, layered vintage with great balance and a long finish.

Goes well with

The 2021 Alexander Valley Vineyards ‘Sin Zin’ is a rich, medium-bodied Zinfandel defined by its jammy dark fruit flavours, black pepper spice, and subtle oak. This profile makes it a highly versatile wine that beautifully complements bold, savoury, and slightly spicy dishes.

Cellaring

5 – 8 years with careful cellaring.

Don’t just take our word for it…

“One of the original cult zin’s from the late 70’s, and still evolving. 100% zin from their best lots, picked and fermented separately. The final product is a big, juicy fruit bomb, with dark fruit hints of cherry, cassis and dark chocolate. Sixteen months in American oak smooths out the tannins with balanced acidity. Perfect for that big thick pizza.” 96 POINTS – Beverage Dynamics
