Alfredo Arribas, El Mas de L’A, Les Margues, Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Gris, 2021, Priorat, Catalonia, Spain

Producer Profile

Alfredo Arribas a multidisciplinary architect, has developed most of his renowned international career in multiple world locations. Recently, more of his works have taken place in his birth town, Barcelona.

In 2001, Alfredo started his adventure in the wine world, after acquiring the estate Clos del Portal, in Priorat, where he centres his activity. In parallel, he develops a recovery task of a bunch of old vines – Trossos – in the neighbour Montsant appellation.

“El Mas de l’A” is undoubtedly clearly focused on the search for a different Priorat. A project based on the different red and white Grenache grapes growing in the enclave of La Morera de Montsant, a valley located between the small towns of Cornudella and Poboleda, this region stands out for its ideal climatic conditions, a perfect balance between north and south, an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, and a rich range of soils.

Viticulture

Opting for sustainable agriculture and viticulture, co-planting as a rule, and stimulating the virtues of the youngest vines. The result is a range of very fine wines with a lower alcohol content and silky tannins. Wines with great potential and small productions.

A dry white wine where strength and freshness go hand in hand, two qualities that are commonly dissociated, and is made possible in this case thanks to the particularities of the terroir where they grow – Margues, mix of calcareous and clay soils.

Winemaking

Les Margues is a blend of white and grey grenaches of limited production that have gone through a very brief maceration. Afterwards, it starts fermentation in steel vats and finishes in 500L Bocois, where it will remain for another 12 months. Bottled unfiltered.

Tasting Note

Aromas of toasted notes; pine nuts, popcorn and caramelised white chocolate. Cool minerality, followed by sensual herbal aromas and smoky, reductive notes. Full-bodied and creamy, grippy and firm, spicy and complex with ripe fruit flavours, floral notes and a salty finish. Expressive and personal, with great tension and structure, profound and multi-layered.

Goes well with

Fried calamari with lemon slices, dried figs and cheese.

Cellaring

6 – 10 years with careful cellaring.
