Producer Profile

Óscar Tobía, trained as an Agricultural Engineer and completed a Master in Viticulture and Oenology. In 1994 he undertook his business adventure by founding his vital project: Bodegas Tobía. Betting from the outset on innovation and creativity, he produced the first barrel-fermented rosé in Spain in 1996, Alma Tobía.

He is a pioneer in Europe in using intelligent tanks that respect the environment and allow for maximum expression and quality wines to be obtained. His business vocation was awarded the Internationalization Award by the La Rioja Chamber of Commerce in 2002.

Alma Tobía is the highest quality wine brand produced by Bodegas Tobía, which stands out for its dedication and care in the production of each of its wines. It is also one of the oldest brands of the house, as the first Alma Tobía Rosé was launched in 1997, more than 25 years ago, and it was the first rosé fermented in oak barrels in Spain.  Currently, this brand includes three exceptional wines: Alma Tobía Tinto 2017, Alma Tobía Único 2023 and Alma Tobía Blanco 2021. These aged wines represent the winery’s highest expression of quality and are intended to provide a unique sensory experience for wine lovers.

Vintage 2019 was of excellent quality, because of different factors, but above all, because of the vineyard’s low vigor and low yieldings, with a great balance of the parameters in the wines, straightfoward fruity aromas, high content in poliphenols and optimal ripeness of the grapes. Along with the impeccable sanitary conditions of the grapes and the benevolent climatology during the ripeness process, this vintage could be considered one of the best ones from last years.

33% Maturana Blanca comes from a vineyard located between San Asensio & Briones and planted in 2008, at an altitude of 650 m. with a North orientation and Atlantic microclimate. Yieldings limited at 4.000 kgs/ha.

33% Sauvignon Blanc comes from a vineyard located in Tudelilla (La Rioja Oriental), at an altitude of 610 m., on a calcareous clayish soil poor in nutrients, Atlantic microclimate. Limited production: 50-55 hl/ha.

33% Chardonnay comes from a spectacular mountainous vineyard planted in 2016 with an altitude of 800 meters in Rioja Oriental on a sandy calcareous soil. Selected low yielding clone of high acidity that does not overcome 5.500 kgs/ha. Atlantic microclimate.

Hand picked harvest and winemaking in small batches of each grape variety destemmed and uncrushed, separately. Followed by cold maceration during 36 hours. Must bleeding and exclusively the free run juice is initially fermented at a controlled temperature of 10-12 C. Soft alcoholic fermentation occurs in lightly toasted Troncais fine grain French new oak barrels. Aged with its lees for 13 months in the same oak barrels with regular “battonage”

Finally, all different batches are assembled and aged for a minimum stay of 9 months in bottle without tartaric acid addition.

Tasting Note

Intense, deep, subtle and clean aromas of quince, pineapple, citrus, mango, pear and apricots, mellow toffee and biscuit on the background. Oak aromas are very well integrated with the fruit, giving us a very fine and elegant nose.

On the pallet it is sweet, creamy and voluminous. It shows us a great freshness, with great fullness and roundness sensations. Broad, long, persistent, subtle bitterness and pleasant aftertaste.

Goes well with

Grilled pigeon with white truffle.

10 – 15 years with careful cellaring.
