Producer Profile

Óscar Tobía, trained as an Agricultural Engineer and completed a Master in Viticulture and Oenology. In 1994 he undertook his business adventure by founding his vital project: Bodegas Tobía. Betting from the outset on innovation and creativity, he produced the first barrel-fermented rosé in Spain in 1996, Alma Tobía.

He is a pioneer in Europe in using intelligent tanks that respect the environment and allow for maximum expression and quality wines to be obtained. His business vocation was awarded the Internationalization Award by the La Rioja Chamber of Commerce in 2002.

Alma Tobía is the highest quality wine brand produced by Bodegas Tobía, which stands out for its dedication and care in the production of each of its wines. It is also one of the oldest brands of the house, as the first Alma Tobía Rosé was launched in 1997, more than 25 years ago, and it was the first rosé fermented in oak barrels in Spain.  Currently, this brand includes three exceptional wines: Alma Tobía Tinto 2017, Alma Tobía Único 2023 and Alma Tobía Blanco 2021. These aged wines represent the winery’s highest expression of quality and are intended to provide a unique sensory experience for wine lovers.

Vintage of high quality, which is one of the best in the last years were expectations were highly overcome; Initial forecast was not extremely favourable due to the different mildew attacks and hailing storms caused in different areas of the DO, joined to the uncertainty provoked by the

Covid19 regarding the lack of experienced workers for manual harvest. In spite of all that, the benevolent climatology during the ripeness process in October and November with low levels of raining, helped to finally get exceptional quality of the grapes.

Tempranillo (73%) From an organically grown vineyard located in Valpierre’s plateau, planted in 2006, in goblet training, at an altitude of 650 m. Very poor clayish ferric soil with gravel substrate. Eastern-West exposure. Purely Atlantic climate. Controlled yielding: 6.000 Kgs/Ha. Atlantic microclimate

Maturana Tinta (27%). From an organically grown vineyard located in Hormilla and planted in 2008 at an altitude of 650 metres in Valpierre’s plateau. Eastern-WestOrientation. Low nutrient and shallow clayish ferric soil with gravel substrate, restraining its productivity. Production: 3.500 Kgs/Ha. Atlantic microclimate.

Meticulous winemaking in small batches of the 2 vineyards separately. Whole berry cold maceration is carried out after destemming in smart tanks, without crushing, at controlled temperature (10-12C) during 2 days.

Bleeding-off the free run juice and must is softly fermented at controlled temperature of 14-15C in new, medium toast, fine-grained French oak barrel, Allier. The wine is aged for 5 months in the same French oak barrels with regular “batonage”. The two grapes varieties are then blended at the end of the ageing period.

Tasting Note

Intense, singular, clean, elegant, complex and enticing aroma of red fruits (strawberry and raspberry) harmonious with a suggestive red ripe fruit and slightly mentholated aroma, with well integrated with smoke and coffee undertones.

On the palate it is well-balanced, fresh, unctuous and silky. The wine lingers in the mouth leading to a long and elegant bitter finish.

Goes well with

Grilled pigeon with white truffle.

6 – 8 years with careful cellaring.
