Óscar Tobía, trained as an Agricultural Engineer and completed a Master in Viticulture and Oenology. In 1994 he undertook his business adventure by founding his vital project: Bodegas Tobía. He is a pioneer in Europe in using intelligent tanks that respect the environment and allow for maximum expression and quality wines to be obtained. His business vocation was awarded the Internationalization Award by the La Rioja Chamber of Commerce in 2002.
Since 1994, he has based his work on the creation and development of three brands: Tobía, Óscar Tobía, Alma Tobía. Oscar’s main philosophy has always been to creative, innovative with a non-conformist spirit.
This was one of the best vintages in recent years, and the initial expectations were far exceeded, as they were not at all flattering, with vineyards affected by major mildew attacks, areas affected by hail and the uncertainty of manual harvesting due to the problems caused by covid19. However, the weather was favourable during the key months of September and October, with little rainfall, which was expected to be much more abundant, and a northerly wind, which led to exceptional grape quality.
We select high-quality Tempranillo vineyards, located in Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón and owned by the winery. They
are very special vineyards, of low-yielding Tempranillo clones with loose bunches and small grains, with calcareous clay and sandy loam soils, all of them with a great predominance of gravel and located at altitudes of
520-560 m.
Whole berry cold maceration is carried out after destemming at controlled temperature during 2 days. Alcoholic Fermentation is carried out into “smart tanks” at controlled temperature followed by malolactic fermentation taking place in American oak barrels with further ageing for 14 months in the same barrels.
Stabilization took place in the barrels, without adding any fining substance. Bottled without filtration so as to respect the quality of the wine.
Very fine and elegant nose. We can find notes of ripe red fruit, plums, black liquorice, with aromas of fine woods such as cedar, incense and sweet spices such as cinnamon and vanilla.
On the palate, it is unctuous, meaty and well balanced. With bright but polished and sweet tannins. Mouth with
great aftertaste of ripe fruit and fine wood. Long and persistent.
Chicken and chorizo risotto.
Now or up to 5 years.
