In 1975, Quico Carrau Pujol, in collaboration with the University of California Davis, began the search for a terroir to plant the first virus-free vines. This place had to have qualities that would adapt to the climate of Uruguay, sandy soils and slopes that would allow good drainage to avoid excess water in the vine. After going through and analysing different soils in the South of Brazil and North of Uruguay, they found this property in Rivera, Cerro Chapeu, in Cuchilla de Santana, with sandy, reddish and deep soils, with low fertility and very good drainage. It is here where the project of selecting vineyards that would adapt to this place began.
In 1997 Francisco Carrau, ninth generation and youngest son of Quico, after touring wineries in different parts of the world, designed the winery, deciding to build it inside a hill to take advantage of gravity and thus achieve vinification with minimal manipulation of the musts.
Currently, Bodegas Carrau is a family business, where five brothers pay tribute to over 260 years of wisdom generated by their ancestors.
Francisco Carrau – Winemaking Legend, Tim Atkin MW Uruguay Report 2021
With the Synesthesia line, the family propose a playful and visual approach to wine, beginning the tasting experience with the label.
Artist Antonio Carrau was invited to capture his tasting experience in visual works, recreating the phenomenon of synesthesia—the stimulation of one sense through another. To complete the sensory circle, the pieces were titled with words that express the sound and vibration of that very experience.
250 meters above sea level. Continental climate with a large temperature range.
Soils of alluvial origin from volcanic materials washed over millions of years that formed very deep reddish sediments rich in iron, with great depth and good drainage.
Hand-picked in 15 kg boxes.
Unlike traditional, heavily-extracted Tannats that sit on their skins for weeks, this wine undergoes a gentler extraction process. It is fermented with indigenous native yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks.
With the focus being on primary fruit the goal is a style where the Tannat harmonizes beautifully right out of the gate. The vinification is deliberately managed to protect the grape’s delicate, fresh aromas of candied blueberries, red berries, and subtle spices rather than burying them under heavy oak.
A young Tannat wine that retains the delicate aromas and complexity of the varietal. Bright ruby red with vibrant purple reflections. Aromas of fresh red and black berry fruits, quince, plums, and a hint of subtle spice. Balanced and approachable with a pleasant structure and softer, harmonious tannins than traditional heavy Tannats.
Because the Castel Pujol Synestesia “Clonck” Tannat is a fresher, more vibrant, and lower-intervention style of Tannat, it pairs beautifully with dishes that match its bright acidity and crunchy red fruit notes, while still providing enough structure to handle savory rich elements.
2 – 3 years with careful cellaring.
