Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery.
Curly Flat was developed from 1989 by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka after the greenfield site had been identified as ideal for growing the early ripening varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2017, Jenifer became the sole owner of Curly Flat. Under her leadership, the winery’s reputation for high-quality winemaking continues. Jenifer and her team, led by winemaker Matt Harrop, are fully committed to producing the best possible wines from the carefully nurtured site.
Volcanic Basalt soils, P58, I1V01, I1V03 & I1V05 clones are used from vines aged 19 to 27 years.
Whole bunch pressed, and fermented using indigenous yeast, aged in French oak barrels for 14 months, of which 35% new French oak & 65% MLF.
The high percentage of whole bunch pressing leads to an elegance within the wine, whilst the use of indigenous yeasts contribute to a lovely, savoury edge to the palate.
A perfumed nose of lemon & lime zest preludes the ripe yet focused white peach & nectarine stone fruits. A sense of wet stone minerality ripples throughout, providing cleansing contrast to more savoury aspects of fennel seed and lees-driven pastry notes all subtly framed by cinnamon oak spice.
Bolts of ripe white peach, preserved lemon, and grapefruit pith form the front and mid-palate before the mineral acidity pulls the palate long to showcase the fine chalk-like textures. Encapsulating the palate throughout is an assuaging creaminess driven by the 14 months on lees.
Release notes current. Has great drinkability now but has 10+ years ahead.
Don’t just take our word for it…
“A touch richer and rounder this vintage, but so appealing, the consistency of Curly Flat’s Chardonnay is quite remarkable. Yes, there are subtle shifts in style in accordance with vintage, but the quality remains high, year in, year out. This is another outstanding vintage in a long run of successes. Drink 2023 to 2032 (SL).” Simon Larkin MW, Atlus Fine WInes
