Curly Flat, Estate, Pinot Noir, 2024, Macedon Ranges, Victoria, Australia

Producer Profile

Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery.

Curly Flat was developed from 1989 by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka after the greenfield site had been identified as ideal for growing the early ripening varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2017, Jenifer became the sole owner of Curly Flat. Under her leadership, the winery’s reputation for high-quality winemaking continues. Jenifer and her team are fully committed to producing the best possible wines from the carefully nurtured site.

The Macedon Ranges is the coolest viticultural area on mainland Australia. This unique viticultural site owes much to the combination of altitude (540 metres above sea level), latitude (south of The Great Dividing Range), and distance from the migrating influence of the ocean.  After warm summer days, crisp cool evenings follow, which slow ripening and help retain natural acidity. These are ideal conditions for the early ripening varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Viticulture

Crafted using hand-picked fruit from 24- to 32-year-old estate vines. The vines are deeply rooted in a mix of volcanic basalt and Upper Ordovician soils at an elevation of 540 metres.

Winemaking

Fermented using wild (indigenous) yeasts. The vinification process incorporates 15% whole bunches to introduce structural spice and savoury complexity.

The 2024 vintage spends 18 months in French oak barrels of various ages: 25% in new oak, 22% in 2nd fill and 53% in 3rd fill.

Tasting Note

The 2024 Estate Pinot Noir is a wine that immediately feels alive in the glass. Aromas of fresh raspberries and red cherries mingle with the soft fragrance of crushed rose petals, while whispers of cedar, vanilla, and gentle spice add depth and warmth. Beneath it all, subtle earthy notes – forest floor, truffle, and dried herbs – give the wine a quietly savoury elegance.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with fine, dusty tannins and bright, balancing acidity that carry the fruit effortlessly through to a long, graceful finish. There’s a natural tension here that keeps the wine lively, while its seamless texture and layered flavours invite you back sip after sip.

Cellaring

This is a Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed now with a little decanting, yet it’s also a wine built to develop and reward patience over the next decade. Vibrant, expressive, and full of personality, the 2024 Estate Pinot captures both the spirit of the vineyard and the care of the vintage – a true reflection of Curly Flat at its best.

Don’t just take our word for it…

The 2024 vintage has been highly praised by critics, securing a 94/100 score from QWine Reviews, which notes its exceptional “moreish flow” and superb cellular potential.
