Curly Flat, Pinot Noir, 2018, Macedon Ranges, Victoria, Australia

Producer Profile

Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery.

Curly Flat was developed from 1989 by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka after the greenfield site had been identified as ideal for growing the early ripening varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2017, Jenifer became the sole owner of Curly Flat. Under her leadership, the winery’s reputation for high-quality winemaking continues. Jenifer and her team, led by winemaker Matt Harrop, are fully committed to producing the best possible wines from the carefully nurtured site.

Viticulture

Volcanic Basalt & Upper Ordovician soils, MV6, 115 and 114 clones are used from vines aged 19 to 27 years.

Winemaking

The Macedon Ranges had average winter and spring rain, then a wet January (twice average) that required strict disease control. February was dry and, through to the end of vintage, had perfect sunny weather (no sunburn issues). Pinot noir was very, very good, with thick skins requiring gentle vinification.

The original blend, sourced from across the vineyard. Includes fruit from the ‘Central’ and Western blocks, across ’95, ’96, ’97 and ’00 plantings. 25% whole bunches, 28 days on skins and aged for 20 months in French oak barriques of which 20% was new oak.

Tasting Note

A layered nose that opens with a flutter of whole bunch lift that seamlessly merges into a pool of vibrant raspberry and black cherry fruits. The layered complexity is completed as notes of spice, leather and black pepper occupy the savoury register.

A voluminous palate coursing with flavour is elegantly restrained by the raft of fine tannin that ferries the red cherry fruits along a fresh stream of cooling acidity.

Goes well with

Pan-seared duck breast and roasted root vegetables.

Cellaring

Overall, 2018 has delivered wines of great power and poise, where enjoyment can be found in either immediate or very long-term drinking. Will cellar to 2030-2033.

Don’t just take our word for it…
“Fine, elegant and fragrant cherry and pomegranate fruit. Overall balance and length are very good. QED.” – 96 points James Halliday 2021 Wine Companion (Drink till 2040)
