Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery.
Curly Flat was developed from 1989 by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka after the greenfield site had been identified as ideal for growing the early ripening varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2017, Jenifer became the sole owner of Curly Flat. Under her leadership, the winery’s reputation for high-quality winemaking continues. Jenifer and her team are fully committed to producing the best possible wines from the carefully nurtured site.
The Macedon Ranges is the coolest viticultural area on mainland Australia. This unique viticultural site owes much to the combination of altitude (540 metres above sea level), latitude (south of The Great Dividing Range), and distance from the migrating influence of the ocean. After warm summer days, crisp cool evenings follow, which slow ripening and help retain natural acidity. These are ideal conditions for the early ripening varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The 2025 vintage marks the return of this label under the precise guidance of renowned consulting winemaker Steve Flamsteed, who focused on restoring the wine’s vibrant, structural frame.
Grapes were harvested in March 2025 from the high-elevation (540m) estate vineyards in the Macedon Ranges. This naturally preserves a backbone of screaming, high-toned acidity, balancing the ripening window.
To keep the emphasis firmly on the bright red berry fruits and delicate savoury complexities, the wine was raised entirely in seasoned French oak that is three years or older.
The aging process utilises a deliberate blend of larger puncheons and hogsheads. This diverse mix of larger barrel sizes reduces the surface-area-to-wine ratio compared to standard barrels, imparting secondary notes of delicate vanilla bean and milk chocolate without dominating the varietal character. The resulting hands-off approach highlights a fine-boned structure, allowing the natural savoury undergrowth and dark fruit characters of the Macedon Ranges terroir to take centre stage.
Features aromas and flavours of dark cherries, plums, mulberries, and redcurrants, paired with savoury charcuterie, pastrami, earthiness, and subtle charred oak complexity. Medium-bodied with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, persistent finish.
Balancing cool-climate fresh acidity with dark berry fruit and a distinct savoury, charcuterie-like complexity. To complement its mid-weight, silky texture and savoury undertones, look for dishes that embrace umami, earthy flavours, or light game.
Rated well by critics (such as 93 points from Ray Jordan) and noted to drink nicely from 2026 through 2030+
“A rather concentrated colour for such a young wine from a cool-climate region. There is plenty to like on the nose, with lifted, crunchy red berries, plum, Kanzi apple, delicate vanilla bean and milk chocolate, the latter derived from three-year-old oak, a mix of puncheons and hogsheads. The palate is driven by screaming acidity, initially feeling assertive, with the fruit still catching up. At first, the nose is more expressive than the palate, which is still settling into its youthful frame. Gradually, the fruit begins to reveal itself, with a lovely, lifted and fine-boned length, which gives the wine great drinkability while continuing to fine-tune its frame.” 92 POINTS – Lisa Cardelli, Wine Pilot
“Both the flavour and the feel of this wine are spot on. Black cherry and undergrowth flavours merge into sweet spice, cedar, mint and assorted forest berries. It has a beautiful cool-but-ripe feel to it, a firmness to its tannin, and an impressive reach to the finish. In varietal terms there’s ample substance here and yet its face is fresh and lively. For both price and quality this is a very attractive offering.” 92 POINTS – Campbell Mattinson
