Day Wines was founded by winemaker and owner Brianne Day in 2012.
Brianne produces boutique, artisanal bottlings made from fruit sourced exclusively from a small group of Oregon growers who utilize Biodynamic, Organic and/or Sustainable vineyard practices. To create distinct expressions of their corner of the world, Day Wines focus on fruit harvested from the esteemed Willamette Valley to exotic varietals found in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley AVA.
All of Brianne’s wines are crafted with an attention to detail that allows her to impart minimum levels of intervention in the winery. ”We take what the vineyard and vintage give us and allow nature to do its thing.” – Brianne Day
Brianne believes the character of Oregon wine is defined by the incredible diversity found in the various growing regions spread across the state. From Applegate Valley in the south to Yamhill-Carlton in the north and numerous AVAs in between, she seeks and works with growers who are committed to stewardship of the soil and the vine through biodynamic and organic practices. These people are the backbone of the Day Wines business, and the team are proud to call them partners and friends.
This 2022 100 Years a Lady honours Brianne’s late Grandmother.
“I love using Pinot Meunier to honour my Grandma, Catherine, there’s a rustic earthiness to the pretty fruit that reminds me of her; a stalwart and steadfast woman whose grit and moxie kept her optimistic and positive through a lifetime of challenges.” – Brianne Day
Brianne’s grandparents were immigrant sharecroppers in North Dakota who moved to the Willamette Valley during the height of the Great Depression. They came to Willamette to find work and managed to get by picking fruit (strawberries and tree fruits). Catherine kept her hands in the dirt the rest of her life, she owned and operated a fruit stand which served her small, rural Washington State community, and planted a giant, family-feeding garden each year of her life.
Grown in La Belle Promenade Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains (organic), Abbey Road Farm in Yamhill Carlton (organic), and Left Coast Cellars in Van Duzer Corridor (sustainable).
Grapes were sorted and mostly destemmed, with just about 10% left whole cluster, into 1.5 ton fermentation vessels. Native fermentation kicked off after 2 days and caps were managed by pigeage and punch downs. Fermentation took 23 days, afterwards juice was moved to neutral French oak and one new French oak barrel, for a total of about 12% new wood. The wine went through full spontaneous malolactic fermntation, and was sulphured afterwards (44 ppm total SO2, 21 ppm free SO2). No other additions/ subtractions were made. 10 month elevage, then racked to stainless and bottled.
This wine shows red fruit of Hood strawberries, sappy bright red cherries, sweet marjoram, juicy plum and forest floor. The finish lingers with a hint of sweetness and firm grippy tannins. This is a tightly textural vintage, balanced by pretty fruit and fresh acidity.
Poultry & Game Bird: The wine’s red berry fruit and soft tannins are a classic match for roasted or smoked duck, turkey, and quail.
Pork: Grilled pork chops or seared pork tenderloin pair beautifully with this varietal.
Mushroom & Earthy Dishes: Dishes like mushroom risotto, woodland mushroom crostini, or earthy stews mirror the secondary notes of the wine.
Salmon & Tuna: Lightly chilled, this wine complements the rich, savoury textures of grilled salmon or even seared tuna steaks.
Soft & Semi-Hard Cheeses: Enjoy it with creamy bries, soft goat cheese, or light Gruyère pastries
5 – 10 years with careful cellaring.
“This is 100% Pinot Meunier that sways you with its perfume of ripe raspberries, violets and talc. The fruit flavours are a bit darker, with damson plums and blackberries melding with black tea and an umami quality similar to button mushrooms. The wine is surprisingly light-bodied, with a tangy texture.” 90 POINTS – Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast
“This 100% Pinot Meunier was named in honour of winemaker Brianne Day’s grandmother, who turned 100 in this wine’s first vintage (2020). The 2022 iteration is sourced from La Belle Promenade in Chehalem Mountains, Abbey Road Farm in Yamhill-Carlton, and Left Coast in Van Duzer Corridor. The wine offers tart cranberry aromatics, a squeeze of CaraCara orange and a note of dusty gravel. The palate follows through with piquant raspberries, tomato leaves and a note of early-season tayberries. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2031.” 93 POINTS – Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
