Day Wines was founded by winemaker and owner Brianne Day in 2012.
Brianne produces boutique, artisanal bottlings made from fruit sourced exclusively from a small group of Oregon growers who utilize Biodynamic, Organic and/or Sustainable vineyard practices. To create distinct expressions of their corner of the world, Day Wines focus on fruit harvested from the esteemed Willamette Valley to exotic varietals found in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley AVA.
All of Brianne’s wines are crafted with an attention to detail that allows her to impart minimum levels of intervention in the winery. ”We take what the vineyard and vintage give us and allow nature to do its thing.” – Brianne Day
Brianne believes the character of Oregon wine is defined by the incredible diversity found in the various growing regions spread across the state. From Applegate Valley in the south to Yamhill-Carlton in the north and numerous AVAs in between, she seeks and works with growers who are committed to stewardship of the soil and the vine through biodynamic and organic practices. These people are the backbone of the Day Wines business, and the team are proud to call them partners and friends.
Sourced from a number of vineyards – Finnigan Hill (Chehalem Mtns), Layne (Applegate Valley), Four Diamonds (Applegate Valley) Dukes Family (Eola Amity Hills), Chris James (Yamhill Carlton), Johan (Van Duzer Corridor), Keleri (Chehalem Mountains).
This joyful and springlike Dazzles of Light white blend is back with a slightly different varietal composition. This year is 60% Chardonnay, 31% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Melon de Bourgogne.
Grapes were direct pressed and settled 24 hours in a chilled stainless tank. Racked off gross lees into 6 year old French oak barrels for spontaneous primary and malolactic fermentation, and fermented untouched and still, save for topping. Racked to stainless steel, filtered and cold stabilized. The only addition was a total SO2 addition of 40ppm.
The Sauvignon Blanc amplifies the more tropical side of Chardonnay with highlights of mango, lime, and a little clean grass and fresh thyme, while the Melon de Bourgogne brings chalky soils, macadamia nut and lily to the blend. The Chardonnay shows off notes of creamy lemon curd, white peach, honeycomb, and a little leesy brioche. It is really delicious. It shows length on the palate, zesty acidity and a bounty of fruit, floral, and mineral flavours. We allowed the wine to go fully through primary and malolactic fermentation, it is crisp, dry and delicious.
A portion of the profits for this wines go to Oregon Wild, a non-profit who champions preservation of wild places in Oregon including old growth forests and wilderness.
Pair it with light, vibrant dishes like fish tacos, scallops, goat cheese, or mildly spiced Thai cuisine.
3 – 5 years with careful cellaring.
“An aptly named wine given its bright acidity and dazzling aromas of lemon zest, icy tonic water and the spicy, citrusy scent of a spicebush. Chardonnay orchard fruit battles Sauvignon Blanc tropical for flavour supremacy, with earthy oregano and lemon zest shouting from the sidelines. Every sip reminds you to go play outside.” 91 POINTS – Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast
“A pretty and nuanced wine with subtle aromas of white peaches, hay and spring blossoms. For a light-bodied wine, it has has a really nice texture of minerality and creaminess. Gentle in every way, including the acidity, it is a well-made, good-value and crowd-pleasing wine, Drink now.” 91 POINTS – James Suckling
“The fleshy Chardonnay elements dominate but are brightened by Sauvignon Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne. All three varieties combine wonde tangy citrus aromatics with Meyer lemon pulp, clover honey and a chalky minerality. The palate carries the weight of Chardonnay, accented by the Bourgogne’s mouthfeel and lifted by a brightness from the Sauvignon Blanc. Tropical pineapple flavours cut against tart lemon, green mangoes succulent mandarin pulp finish. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2034.” 93 POINTS – Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
