Day Wines was founded by winemaker and owner Brianne Day in 2012.
Brianne produces boutique, artisanal bottlings made from fruit sourced exclusively from a small group of Oregon growers who utilize Biodynamic, Organic and/or Sustainable vineyard practices. To create distinct expressions of their corner of the world, Day Wines focus on fruit harvested from the esteemed Willamette Valley to exotic varietals found in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley AVA.
All of Brianne’s wines are crafted with an attention to detail that allows her to impart minimum levels of intervention in the winery. ”We take what the vineyard and vintage give us and allow nature to do its thing.” – Brianne Day
Brianne believes the character of Oregon wine is defined by the incredible diversity found in the various growing regions spread across the state. From Applegate Valley in the south to Yamhill-Carlton in the north and numerous AVAs in between, she seeks and works with growers who are committed to stewardship of the soil and the vine through biodynamic and organic practices. These people are the backbone of the Day Wines business, and the team are proud to call them partners and friends.
Brianne has been wanting to work with another stellar Chardonnay site and was delighted to have the opportunity to purchase fruit from this gorgeous
vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills. In an effort to get to know the vineyard well, she chose three different blocks and three different clones; Hyde Wente (California heritage clone), Mount Eden (another Cali heritage clone) and Chardonnay 96 (a Dijon clone). The Hyde Wente and Mount Eden were picked a little earlier for the structure and acid and the Dijon 96 a little later for some stone fruit and riper fruit.
The grapes were gently pressed in our small pneumatic press, then settled cold in stainless steel to remove the gross lees. Juice was racked to half barrique and half puncheon barrels, about 30% was new but from cooperages who focus on structure as opposed to wood flavours. Cooperage was very carefully considered and researched, and only barrels with very gentle wood notes were used. The wine fermented spontaneously and went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation and no lees stirring happened in an effort to focus on purity and clarity of flavours. It was aged for 18 months in our temperature-controlled cellar. Barrels were racked to stainless steel one month before bottling to allow the wine to come together seamlessly.
The wine is lively, lithe, and has a fairly solid mineral structure with a supple and glossy mid palate. Lemon curd, peaches, river stones, lime zest, sweet orange, honeysuckle and a hint of pastry all come to mind.
Rich Seafood: Pair with dishes like lobster, crab with drawn butter, or linguine with shrimp. The wine’s acidity beautifully cuts through the richness of the butter and seafood.
Roasted Poultry: Enjoy with roasted chicken seasoned with tarragon or herbs. The wine’s texture provides a harmonious match for the savoury roasted meat.
Creamy Pastas & Risotto: Match the wine’s weight with a creamy mushroom risotto or fettuccine Alfredo. The acidity keeps the rich, creamy dishes from feeling heavy on the palate.
5 – 8+ years with careful cellaring.
“Fruit from one the Willamette Valley’s oldest vineyards is transformed into a modern era Chardonnay with blazing acidity. Comforting aromas of lemon tarts and passion fruit are punctuated by notes of Thai basil and mineral. The flavours of Meyer lemons and saltine cracker-like salinity remind me of an Atlantic beach pie, which is a very good thing.” 94 POINTS – Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast
“Aromas of lemon curd, sea salt, bay laurel, fresh pine and yuzu with warm undertones of baked lemons and spiced apple galette. The palate is rich, with the same pleasing mix of baked fruit, citrus and forest notes. The acidity is integrated, with an oily and chalky texture. Quite compelling, with a lot of spices at the end. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold.” 94 POINTS – James Suckling
“This is quite the Chardonnay from Brianne Day and the renowned Eola Springs Vineyard in the best Chardonnay appellation in America. Winemaker Brianne Day chose three different blocks and three different clones: Hyde Wente, Mount Eden and Chardonnay 96 (a Dijon clone). She picked the Hyde Wente and Mount Eden early for structure and acid, and the Dijon 96 was picked later to flesh out the palate with riper fruits. Captivating lemon curd aromas and rich, honeyed apricots are followed by almond pastry cream.—dollops of rich lemon cream, ripe peach fuzz, and rich apricot flesh. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2038.” 96 POINTS – Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
