Day Wines, Vin de Days l’Orange, 2024, Willamette Valley AVA, Oregon, America

Producer Profile

Day Wines was founded by winemaker and owner Brianne Day in 2012.

Brianne produces boutique, artisanal bottlings made from fruit sourced exclusively from a small group of Oregon growers who utilize Biodynamic, Organic and/or Sustainable vineyard practices. To create distinct expressions of their corner of the world, Day Wines focus on fruit harvested from the esteemed Willamette Valley to exotic varietals found in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley AVA.

All of Brianne’s wines are crafted with an attention to detail that allows her to impart minimum levels of intervention in the winery. ”We take what the vineyard and vintage give us and allow nature to do its thing.”  – Brianne Day

Brianne believes the character of Oregon wine is defined by the incredible diversity found in the various growing regions spread across the state. From Applegate Valley in the south to Yamhill-Carlton in the north and numerous AVAs in between, she seeks and works with growers who are committed to stewardship of the soil and the vine through biodynamic and organic practices. These people are the backbone of the Day Wines business, and the team are proud to call them partners and friends.

Viticulture

The Vin de Days l’Orange is back due to popular demand. This 2024 vintage is blend of Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Pinot gris is a super fun expression of these aromatic varietals and their personalities when made with generous skin contact.

The fruit for the 2024 was sourced from 3 selected vineyards – Anne Amie Estate, Twelve Oaks and Aurora.

Winemaking

The 2024 vintage was a calm affair where fruit was able to ripen without the stress of intense heat or autumn rains. Grapes were destemmed into 1.5-ton
fermenters, and fermentation kicked off spontaneously. The wine fermented on grape skins throughout primary fermentation, until dry, which was about three weeks of skin-contact time. This built a firm tannic structure and enhances the depth of the wine’s eventual aromatic and flavour profiles. Punch downs were twice per day. When it became dry, we racked the wine and pressed into neutral oak barrels to age and complete malolactic fermentation. This vintage was filtered with partial malolactic fermentation, to keep the acid in a  fresh place. A minimal amount of sulphur was used, just before bottling.

Tasting Note

Ripe Blood orange and Meyer lemon dominate the nose this vintage. Expressive tropical notes of starfruit, guava, and mango shine through, supported by aromas of rose water and sweet herbs. Juicy, lively and fresh with playful tannins on the palate, the citrus notes are reflected with citrus and stone fruit flavours filling the mouth. The fruit profile evolves in the glass, becoming even more lush and juicy in expression as the wine opens with air, and the finish remains vibrant, crisp, and grippy.

Goes well with

Its vibrant citrus and spice profile calls for umami-rich flavours, earthy root vegetables, and crispy fried foods that can balance its light tannins and high acidity.

Cellaring

A wine that is delectable in its youth, we consider the l’Orange worthy of aging for three to five years.

Don’t just take our word for it…

“This kitchen sink aromatic white blend from the Willamette Valley has loads of fleshy tropical aromatics. Guava and passionfruit mingle with tingly notes of Belgian Geuze; the palate is succulent, with ripe nectarine flesh, candied orange peels, and an earthy tone that turns savoury on the finish. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2030.” 91 POINTS – Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
