Georg Preisinger, Cuvée GOLS, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, 2019, Burgenland, Austria

Producer Profile

Viticulture has been the focus of the Preisinger family for five generations. What began in 1851 as mixed farming with animal husbandry has developed over generations into today’s winery.

5th Generation Georg Preisinger,  put it quite simply in and of itself: “You can taste the origin of good wine. The love for it, too.”

The rocket is a carefully chosen symbol for their wines. It stands for the journey through time that becomes possible through the enjoyment of strong-charactered wines: The immersion into a past year, the taste structure of the past handed down through time to the present. Sun, coolness, rain, dryness. But also, the overcoming of distances – which good wine masters so well. By the way, you can experience a journey through time of the special kind on board our top wines: with up to 47-year-old vines that encompass some of the oldest vegetative memories of the vineyards of Gols.

Viticulture

A cuvée of the highest quality from traditional local varieties of Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt from the best Gols vineyards, Ungerberg and Zwergäcker, planted in 1970 and 2002. Black earth and sandy-loam soils with a high lime content.

Winemaking

Spontaneous fermentation in large wooden vats with 3 weeks maceration. Followed by 24 months in French oak barrels of which 30% is new.

Tasting Note

Scent of cherries and mixed berries with a special note of cassis and delicate dried floral aromas as well as slightly mineral tones in the background. Polished, tart, juicy fruit, very fine tannins, slightly smoky wood and a touch of bacon, good persistence, roasted notes, hints of dried vegetal and spicy notes in the background, has a polished finish, earthy to mineral notes, very good finish.

Goes well with

Whole roasted duck/goose, barbequed steak, grilled lamb chops, roasted lamb loin with a mild sauce, game stew.  Can also pair well with some spice.  Soft cheese with washed rind, spicy hard cheese.

Cellaring

6-10 years with careful cellaring.
