Kalós Wines were created by the Losada family, who took up residence in Mendoza 20 years ago. It was created to pay tribute to Calixto, the Losada family’s grandfather. That is why the family decided to use his lifetime stories as a source of inspiration for the names of the wines. The name “Calixto” is of Greek origin and comes from the word “Kalós,” which means “something of great beauty.” This is how Malbec Gran Reserva Kalós Cru was born, a wine inspired by Calixto’s elegance, attractiveness and lingering memories.
Part of the philosophy of Kalós Wine is to pay tribute to the local people’s hospitality by producing wine of the highest quality. With this in mind, they selected the best grapes in Altamira and brought together winemakers Pablo Benavides and Fabián Valenzuela to make their wines.
Malbec – Altamira, San Carlos – 1150 metres above sea level – 20 year old vines
Cabernet Franc – Barrancas, Maipú, Mendoza – 759 metres above sea level – 20 year old vines
Petit Verdot – Barrancas, Maipú, Mendoza – 759 metres above sea level – 18 year old vines
Soil structures:
Malbec – Permeable, calcareous, rocky soils containing pebble combined with thick sand and silt. A mild climate, with harsh winters and warm summers with cool nights. The grapes from Altamira lend the wine great character and a distinctive structure. Complex wines with a long finish are obtained, with great potential for oak aging.
Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot – This vineyard has deep alluvial soils, a rocky subsoil, and sediments of sand, silt and clay. The scarcity of organic material keeps the vineyard from growing excessively, which translates into outstanding grape quality. It’s warm and dry climate is tempered by the high altitude and intense sunlight. The grapes from this area yield subtle and well-balanced wines with sweet aromas of black fruit, and a pleasant freshness with hints of spice.
Malbec is picked between the 2nd & 3rd week of April / Cabernet Franc between 3rd & 4th of March / Petit Verdot between 1st & 2nd week of April. Grapes are picked by hand and placed in 15kg crates. Total maceration time is between 15-20 days, fermentation (each grape variety separately) takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel. Only the Malbec spends time in oak – 12 months in a mixture of French and American.
This Blend has a deep red colour with violet tints. In the nose the aromas reminiscent of red fruits, blackberries, cassis, red pepper, spices and plums with a delicate touch of vanilla and chocolate, well integrated. In the mouth it is round and velvety, very persistent, with ripe and sweet tannins. Good volume with a long and elegant finish. This wine is characterized by its typical complexity resulting from the combination of three varietals with a lot of character.
