Lange Twins, Redtail, Single Vineyard, Old Vine Zinfandel, 2021, Jahant AVA, Lodi, California, America

Producer Profile

Lange Twins is a family-owned and farm-first winery in the Lodi appellation of California, committed to cultivating a lasting impact.

Behind a glass of Lange Twins wine is a legacy of responsible land stewardship and forward-thinking sustainable winegrowing practices ensuring the unique estate vineyard blocks they’ve farmed for generations are preserved for the future.

The Lange family started in California on the cusp of the gold rush just as this fertile western region became a state. With a German ancestry, the twins’ great grandparents emigrated to Lodi in 1870. Their initial farming venture was non-irrigated watermelons and wheat. After years of demanding work, a vineyard was purchased in the early 1900’s – property that is tilled by the family today.

Passing down agrarian talents from father-to-son, landed twins Randy and Brad Lange the chance to carve out a modern business of not only planting, cultivating, and nurturing the vines, but making the leap to bottle their hard work as premium wines.

The twins’ vision, confidence, and determination grew a profitable business in the Lodi and Clarksburg appellations from a small family property to more significant holdings, including a state-of-the-art winery. All of which gives the family the opportunity to manage the business with a 360-degree approach.

The generational shift continues as their children, now talented adults, have stepped forward with the fifth generation of Langes making a calculated lifelong commitment to the family. Each member of the fifth gen has carved out their role in either the viticulture or winery team by adding their unique spin and leadership to the future of agriculture, not only locally, but also holding state and national positions.

Viticulture

The 2021 vintage brought  the earliest start of harvest Lange Twins have experienced, with their crews starting on July 26th. After the white and early red varietals were brought in to the winery, many of the red varietals were predicted to reach maturity at the same time. The compaction of the second half of the harvest season became both a challenge and priority for everyone. As Fall approached, the smaller fruit set, paired with consistently higher temperatures caused many red varietals to mature rapidly. Varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petite Sirah came off three weeks sooner than average, with slightly higher brix than targeted, although with good acidity. With all said and done, the vintage came in smaller than expected, though with outstanding quality that we are thrilled to present.

Farmed responsibly and validated with dual certification through The Lodi Rules and California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). In 2012 the Redtail Vineyard was planted adjacent to the winery in the heart of the Jahant AVA. The 3.62 acre block has open vines with small canopies allowing filtered sunlight to uniformly ripen clusters.

Winemaking

12 month aging in American oak barrels.

Tasting Note

Vibrant flavours and a supple tannic structure define this vintage of  Redtail Zinfandel. The bouquet unfolds into a stunning medley of ripe strawberry, liquorice, and sweet tobacco. A full year of maturation in American oak casks imparts rich spice tones and sweet tannins that add to the complexity. On the palate, this wine produces a smooth mouthfeel, combining brighter flavours of strawberry candy up front with a savoury progression of toffee and coconut that carry through to the finish.

Goes well with

It shines alongside foods like charred barbecue ribs, brisket, peppery sausages, robust blue cheese burgers, or rich pasta with tomato-based sauces. The wine’s ripe dark fruit perfectly complements savoury, caramelized meats.

Cellaring

3 to 5 years from its vintage date. While it is delicious and ready to drink upon release, its robust tannins and fruit-forward profile allow it to age for up to 5 to 8 years under ideal conditions, though it is generally not meant for ultra-long-term aging.
