Leconfield, The Sydney Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018, Coonawarra, South Australia

Producer Profile

Leconfield Sydney showcases all that heralds Cabernet Sauvignon as the world’s most famous red wine grape varietal.

A legendary wine honouring wine industry legend and Leconfield founder, Sydney Hamilton.

This wine pays homage to Sydney’s dream… in 1974, at the age of 76 and a winemaking career spanning nearly 60 years, Sydney still yearned to make a classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Selecting Coonawarra as the region to fulfil his ambitious dream, Sydney began to plant vines in the now famed Coonawarra terra-rossa over limestone soils.

A true Reserve Wine with the premium grapes selected from the vineyard at harvest. Fine medium to full bodied palate with silky tannins and great persistence of flavour, this wine has the elegance and structure expected of fine Cabernet Sauvignon. We think that with every release of Leconfield Sydney, his dream is realised.

2017 was a cooler season, reversing a trend in recent years for earlier harvests. Good winter rains and a cooler spring saw a delayed budburst and flowering. Despite a few hot days in January, summer was mild and flavour ripening took time and patience.

Whites were harvested in mid to late March with excellent quality of fruit definition. With rain clouds on the horizon in late April and Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Franc already picked, Leconfield waited until just after Easter to harvest the majority of Cabernet Sauvignon. The quality of the wines from this vintage, resonate with the reds showing the finesse and style similar to the wonderful 2004 vintage.

Hand pruning, crop thinning and shoot positioning of vines achieve ideal sunlight and ventilation, to ensure optimal fruit ripening. Individual bunch selection of only the most consistently ripe grapes from the most outstanding vines, delivers an exceptional final parcel.

Fruit is pressed to open top Taransaud French oak vats where the ferment is pumped over daily to achieve optimal colour and flavour extraction. Primary fermentation is completed in new French oak, before the undertaking of several rackings and the transfer to three-year-old French oak hogsheads to complete seven months of maturation.

Post bottling the wine receives a further two years bottle maturation before release – reserve wine in its truest form.

Tasting Note

Exhibiting a rich and luscious, full-bodied concentration of red berries, cassis and mint, this smooth, elegant and structured wine is framed by silky tannins and great persistence of flavour – all the hallmarks that position Cabernet Sauvignon as the world’s most famous red wine grape varietal.

96 POINTS – Jeni Port, Wine Pilot

95 POINTS – Huon Hooke, The Real Review

“It is blindingly obvious that this is something special from the very first sniff. A great vintage, a top producer, a brilliant region and their most revered grape – what else do you need? It is a tribute to founder, Sydney Hamilton, who was behind Leconfield in its early days and would have made those wonderful wines from the 1970s. Opaque maroon. This is seriously good. Gorgeous nose with blackberries, chocolate, cloves, dry herbs, cassis, vanilla and mint with superb oak integration. The wine is exquisitely balanced, with an ideal structure, focus and direction, and maintains intensity for the full, very long journey. A really impressive wine that will sail through twenty years in good cellars.” 97 POINTS – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
