Good news for family wine companies: the Adams family of Langhorne Creek has bought back the Metala brand name.
Metala is the name of their 131-year-old property and vineyard, and also the name of a wine, but the brand name has been owned for some 50 years by other wine companies, the latest being Treasury Wine Estates (TWE).
Until just five years ago, the Metala wine was vinified from grapes grown on the Metala vineyard, then inexplicably it became a non-vineyard specific blend. The view of many observers was that Treasury had kept the retail price of the wine down for so long that the cost of Metala grapes probably no longer gave TWE the profit margin it wanted.
“The home-coming and relaunch of the brand means that when wine lovers buy a bottle of Metala wine they will once again be getting the original, rich and full-bodied Metala fruit they’ve come to expect.” – Guy Adams
