Viticulture

Overall, Vintage 2022 is right up there for quality. Reds have intense, rich and balanced flavours and colours. Whites have pretty aromatics and natural acidity. It may be as well regarded as 2021. The second cooler than usual season in a row for McLaren Vale. Yields were generally lower. The estate was fortunate to avoid frost and hail damage. The cooler conditions contributed to a lower percentage of berry set and final yield. Summer was mild with no days above 40 degrees. Veraison was late and, with a cooler summer, meant a long ripening period with good acid retention and excellent flavour development. The 2022 vintage wines are flavoursome and well structured.

Winemaking

McLaren Vale provides good climate for Chardonnay and growing conditions in 2022 were ideal. The fruit was harvested while the acidity was still vibrant and sugar level not too high to retain elegance. Some flavoursome pressings were re-incorporated into the free run and the wine fermented with a neutral yeast. The French oak used provides a subtle background to the fruit, while maturation on lees has helped provide the persistence of flavour and it was elected to make a dry style.

29% New French oak, 17% 1 y.o French oak, Balance older. 17 months maturation.

Tasting Note

This Chardonnay has lovely elegance with persistent stone fruit flavours. Dry in style, medium bodied and finishes with a clean, bright, soft acidity. Fresh cut nectarine. Fragrant and fruit driven with a subtle influence of French oak.

Goes well with

An excellent companion for poultry, seafood or pasta.

Cellaring

5-6 years of aging will provide a nutty, rounded complexity but many will enjoy it for its primary youthful appeal.
