Under the expert eye of the award-winning winemaker, Alex Russell, Alex Russell Wines has raised the bar of winemaking in South Australia’s Riverland region for the last six years. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry, both locally and internationally, Alex’s motivation to create the best possible product has resulted in a diverse range of premium alternative wines.
Alex Russell has also been personally involved in designing and creating one of the most innovative and state-of-the-art wineries in Australia. The new facility includes a state-of-the-art cellar door for tourists, which is an excellent example of how Alex’s vision for the future is creating an exceptional product that will allow his customers to experience their brand first-hand.
Alex Russell’s reputation for producing some of the finest alternative wines in Australia is well earned.
Viticulture
2019 vintage will be remembered as a hot and dry harvest. The season started with budburst occurring at the normal time, but a hot summer required exceptional irrigation management to nurture the vines to their full potential. Challenging climatic conditions were managed which resulted in good to excellent wine quality.
Winemaking
Grown on an organic vineyard in Barmera, these grapes thrive in the hot Riverland climate. Wine writer Max Allen describes Riverland Lagrein as a square peg in a round hole – growing so well having originated in the Italian Alps. 15 months maturation in new and old French oak barrels.
Tasting Note
In true Lagrein fashion the wine is drying with a leathery edge to it; it’s coursing with black cherry, black olives, black tea, and dark fruits. A touch of vanilla from the French oak gives richness to the more savoury aspects of the wine. It will live for a long time and at the price it is well worth seeking out.
Goes well with
Beef stew with speck, mushrooms, root vegetables and polenta.
