S.R. Tonella Cellars, Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, 2022, Rutherford Valley, Napa, California, America

Producer Profile

Steve Tonella was born in Napa Valley and grew up living in Sonoma and Rutherford. He is the 4th Generation crafting wines from this wonderful Napa estate.

From an early age Steve worked in the vineyards with his father and grandfather.  Enjoying the hot sun and helping in the vineyard by suckering vines (removing unwanted shoots) tying, training, and irrigating formed his early encounters in vineyards.  He says he is amazed to have survived as the mode of transportation was the infamous 3-wheeler motorcycles that were accident prone and tipped easily.

Those early years shaped Steve’s endless commitment to vineyard management and passion for winemaking.

S. R. Tonella Cellars is the culmination of over 100 continuous years in the wine business in Rutherford, Napa Valley. Their purpose is simply to make history by crafting the best premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc & Bordeaux wines that represent the best of Rutherford and Napa Valley.

S. R. Tonella Cellar’s aspiration is that their wine is shared to create some small but memorable piece of history with everyone who crosses paths with the estate.

Today, Steve manages the 100 year old family vineyard and wine business with the help of his wife Ariadna.

Viticulture

Located in the heart of Rutherford in Napa Valley is the estate vineyard and backbone of S. R. Tonella Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. To Steve’s knowledge, the J.J. Ponti – Tonella property is one of only a handful of commercial vineyards farmed by hand in Napa Valley. It is located on prestigious Rutherford benchland renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines grown in this soil are deeply rooted in the ground, producing rich and complex grapes. The vineyard is cultivated in a vertical cordon style; the vines are supported on their own with no trellis system, resulting in a strong, healthy vineyard. This is not the easiest, most modern or highest-yielding system, but is one of heritage, resulting in the most sustainable, highest-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the source.

100% Single Vineyard Rutherford Bench Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyard features two different exposures and two site specific French clones, 412, 685.

Vineyard cultivated by hand, vertical cordon trained vines produce a limited yield of 2-3 tons per acre.

Don’t just take our word for it…

“100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in French oak (70% new). High-toned black currant fruit mingles with sweet cedar and pressed wildflowers. Medium-bodied on the palate, with firm, structured tannins that carry a mineral-driven tension, showcasing their Rutherford pedigree. The finish is balanced and inviting, offering freshness and good tension throughout. Drinking Window: 2025 – 2035.” – 94 POINTS, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter, 5th February 2025.
