S.R. Tonella Cellars, Sky & Vine, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023, Sonoma, California, America

Producer Profile

Steve Tonella was born in Napa Valley and grew up living in Sonoma and Rutherford. He is the 4th Generation crafting wines from this wonderful Napa estate.

From an early age Steve worked in the vineyards with his father and grandfather.  Enjoying the hot sun and helping in the vineyard by suckering vines (removing unwanted shoots) tying, training, and irrigating formed his early encounters in vineyards.  He says he is amazed to have survived as the mode of transportation was the infamous 3-wheeler motorcycles that were accident prone and tipped easily.

Those early years shaped Steve’s endless commitment to vineyard management and passion for winemaking.

S. R. Tonella Cellars is the culmination of over 100 continuous years in the wine business in Rutherford, Napa Valley. Their purpose is simply to make history by crafting the best premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc & Bordeaux wines that represent the best of Rutherford and Napa Valley.

S. R. Tonella Cellar’s aspiration is that their wine is shared to create some small but memorable piece of history with everyone who crosses paths with the estate.

“Sky & Vine embraces the diversity and integration of Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Channeling over 100 years of wine growing heritage, we are blessed to work with terroir driven, family owned vineyards throughout the appellations within Napa and Sonoma. The wine celebrates a sense of place a wonderful balance of fruit, subtle spices and a rich mouthfeel to add something special to any occasion.” — Steve Tonella

Viticulture

Grapes are sourced from multi generational sustainable growers.

Winemaking

Winemakers: Phillip Titus & Charles McKahn.

The Sky & Vine Cabernet Sauvignon (produced by S.R. Tonella Cellars) is typically aged in French oak barrels for about 18 to 20 months, with a significant portion (often 50% or more) consisting of new oak.

Tasting Note

Welcomes with an opening of black fruit, cherry, cocoa and berry notes. Rounded and full bodied inviting the palate with rich layers of red & black stone fruit and savoury spices. Silky tannins give way to a lengthy finish of forest berries mocha and pleasant persistent finish.

Goes well with

Marbled Red Meats: A grilled ribeye or prime rib is the gold standard. The fat and umami in the beef counteract the wine’s grippy tannins, giving it an incredibly smooth mouthfeel.

Herb-Crusted Lamb: Herb treatments like rosemary and thyme match the savoury and earthy undertones of the wine beautifully.

Aged Hard Cheeses: Pair with aged Cheddar, Gouda, or Parmigiano-Reggiano. The saltiness and fat in the cheese highlight the fruit-forward nature of the wine.

Cellaring

5 – 12 years with careful cellaring.
