Small Wonder, Landscape, Blanco, 2025, Tamar Valley, Tasmania, Australia

Producer Profile

Overstory, the owners of SMALL WONDER, is an Australian company proud to own vineyards in both Margaret River, Western Australia, and the Tamar Valley in Tasmania.

These very different locations offer the opportunity to craft wines with distinct profiles according to the unique terroir of each region. Tasmania is a classically cool climate area, producing wines of fresh acidity, elegance and restraint.

41 degrees South and 50 metres above sea level, on the Western Ridge of the Tamar Valley is where you’ll find Small Wonder. Their 20 hectares of vines were planted in 1998, nestled within native bushland and feeling the influence of both the Tamar River, as well as the cooling winds which whip off the Bass Strait, to the north. This allows their wines to show freshness, detail and vivacity, expressing the remarkable characteristics of Tasmania and importantly  – their small place within it.

The estate has already seen a few challenges as they traverse the landscape of this vision and know there will be more hurdles to come. This is just a reminder that the journey is only just beginning.

The Landscape wines are a celebration of Tasmania and its many wonders.

Slightly surreal in nature, each label depicts a different Tasmanian landscape, celebrated in unique ways by the archive characters. Their varied interactions with the land express how each of us enjoys the land in our own way, and how valuable and inherent that connection is.

Viticulture

The fruit for the 2025 Blanco was sourced from Small Wonders 2 estates in Tamar & Coal River Valleys, Tasmania.

the Tamar Valley vineyard is ACO certified organic, and the Coal River Valley vineyard is in conversion to certified organic.

Winemaking

Small Wonder’s new southern vineyard in the Coal River Valley includes a small block of Viognier, and as a relatively unusual variety for Tasmania, they were excited to have it in the winery for the first time. It was important to harvest this block on the earlier side, targeting freshness and delicacy while avoiding any overt and oily characters. The juice was fermented at cool temperatures until dry, producing a delicately framed wine, with light floral notes. The inclusion of Chardonnay brought body and texture to the blend while Pinot Gris delivered spice and aromatics. The result is a harmonious and beautifully textured wine, perfect for summertime drinking.

Tasting Note

A beguiling thing – a blend of three varieties that’s delicate, textural and yet ample. It is fluid and fluent with a fresh thread of acidity, whisps and hints of exoticism and framed by green laced fruit. Sophisticated, grown-up… dial in.

Goes well with

Cellaring

Don’t take our word for it

‘The 2025 Landscape Blanco White represents the first crop of fruit from the newly acquired vineyard in Coal River Valley and comprises a blend of 60% Viognier, 20% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Gris. Aromatically, of course, the Viognier rides high on this wine, with notes of apricot blossom and green apple. The fruit was intentionally harvested early in order to avoid the native unctuousness that is endemic to the Viognier grape. In the mouth, the wine is textural and rich, long and piercing. I like it so much. The Chardonnay and Pinot Gris harness or restrict the Viognier, and yet the irrepressible nature of Viognier exudes through the wine. This is a ripping little wine. It is interesting and great. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.’
