Valtravieso, Nogara, Verdejo, 2022, Rueda DO, Spain

Producer Profile

Valtravieso is one of the first wineries to have its own vineyard in Ribera del Duero, located in one of the region’s highest limestone moorlands at an altitude of 915m. From this unique setting where the vineyards and winery are located, they seek to achieve the highest quality in all processes, with minimum intervention in both the field and in productions.

Valtravieso therefore achieve high altitude wines, in limestone moorland, with a unique personality and style for this area; they are elegant, deep, and long. Wines that have tension and comprise mineral and fresh notes.

Viticulture

Vineyard site – 850 metres above sea level

Irregular soils with excellent drainage in the highest layers; They are mainly poor, sandy and gravelly soils with a lot of boulders. Some are also limestone and muddy with a mixture of gravel and stone. In the lower layers they are strong and muddy allowing water to be stored to be able to regulate itself in the months of summer.

2022 was a fairly dry harvest and somewhat cooler than the previous one. It can be considered excellent and from which wines of great quality have been obtained. Aromatic intensity, with good structure in the mouth and great length. Despite being a drier year, the balance we found between acidity and alcohol level predicts wines with greater longevity.

Winemaking

The faithful expression of the Verdejo variety, fresh and fruity with light vegetal notes. A careful fermentation on its lees for at least 8 months makes the wine have volume and balance without losing its natural freshness.

Selected parts of centuries-old vineyards, which ferment and age in barrels and foudre, and trellised vineyards, which ferment in stainless steel. After fermentation the wine is left on its own lees both in the barrel and in the tank for an additional 6 months. Once defined by tasting that the wine is at its optimal point, it is assembled so everything can homogenize and then clarification and filtration is carried out before bottling.

Tasting Note

Straw-yellow colour that denotes its aging on lees and passage through barrels. Very clean on the nose and very aromatic. Notes of apple and pear with light vegetal touches varietal characteristics such as fresh fennel. Mouth: Elegant, complex and long in the mouth. Fresh, unctuous attack at entry into the mouth with a finish persistent, tasty and precise.
