Bodegas Estancia Piedra, Crianza, 2018, Toro, Spain

Producer Profile

Estancia Piedra was born from a family dream, a family who wanted to turn their passion into reality: to produce excellent quality wines.
The vineyard was planted in 1968, and is the largest parcel of old vines in the Toro D.O. The Estancia Piedra team of highly qualified professionals ensure that their passion for wine is reflected every day in a quality product, a wine that represents the character of the Duero region.

Their winery, situated in the Guareña valley in the heart of the Toro D.O., specializes in enotourism.

Piedra wines have been created to delight the senses, to celebrate life and friendship. With a wide range in continuous expansion, these wines adapt to the tastes of a wide variety of palates. From young and natural wines made without sulphites or any additive treatment, to wines that appreciate the value of time and maturity, which express the best of a very old vineyard in the Toro region – “Wines proud of their origin.”

Viticulture

All fruit is sourced from the Bocarraje Vineyard parcel of 40.67 Ha, planted in 1968 on original rootstock and in goblet formation, with a density of 1000 vines / Ha. Planted with one of the purest and most autochthonous clones of Tinta de Toro as well as Garnacha. The average annual rainfall is 350 mm. Due to the heterogeneity of the soil, the diversity of orientations and differences in altitude the parcel is divided into four subparcels.

Winemaking

Strict sorting of the fruit on its arrival at the winery. Ten days in stainless steel 15,000ltr temperature-controlled tanks (maximum 25ºC). Frequent pumping over. Malolactic fermentation in French Oak, followed by 12 months in barrels and 12 months in bottle prior to release. Light filtration and clarification prior to bottling.

Tasting Note

Attractive intense, clear, bright cherry red core colour, with garnet hints on the rim. The nose is complex with an abundance of ripe red fruits layered over spiced and toasty notes. Unctuous and full of flavour on the palate, where the fruit notes shine through. This is a structured wine with noble tannins and a long, aromatic finish.

Decanting is recommended before consumption. It is a wine that can improve once in the glass.

Goes well with

With meats, game, roasts, grills, cured cheeses and sausages.

Cellaring

Will benefit from carefully cellaring for 4-6 years.
