Bodegas Luzón, Condesa Luna, Blanco, 2021, Jumilla, Spain

Producer Profile

Bodegas Luzón is one of the main producers and exporters of quality wines of the D.O. Jumilla, and one of its most historic wineries, producing wine since the late nineteenth century.

The wine growing area of Jumilla is located southeast of Spain, north of the region of Murcia. The climate is continental, influenced by the Mediterranean Sea with warm days, rains that do not reach 300 litres per square meter, and cold nights. The result is a harsh climate, which causes a thick textured soil and allows to obtain small grape bunches, with a good concentration of sugar, excellent acidity and thicker skins.

To reach their origins, we must go back to 1841. Don José de Molina, commander of the Royal Armies stationed in the Spanish colony of Manila (Philippines), decides to return to his land Jumilla. It is then when he names his lands as “Finca Luzón”, in honour of the island where he was so long.

Viticulture

Bodegas Luzón manage about 1,200 hectares of vineyards, owned, and managed by farmers.

The main variety that you can find in the vineyards is, of course, Monastrell, a grape so characteristic in the Region and that serves as the basis for many of the Estate’s wines. It is a variety of strong character that usually derives in wines with a remarkable graduation.

Other varieties are Garnacha Tintorera, a grape very planted both in our area and in Alicante; Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot in terms of the red varieties, and Macabeo (or Viura) and Chardonnay in the white ones. Picked in 10 and 15 kilos crates, to preserve the integrity of the grape.
